Re: Why do Lightning Maps differ so much

Hello Brett
I do not listen somewhere about receiver VHF for the lightning strikes, because the strikes it give signal at VLF for long distances usually ,but it is interesting for local detection if there is ,your thought finds me positive about local detection strikes at VHF ,because at local strikes the detector at VLF it have some problems near about <200 km because the signal at VLF is very sensitivity ,of caurse we decrease the gain when we have local strikes, but there is yet a small problem .VHF receiver it is not sensitivity for long distance but at local detection it can to be better from VLF .Dopler and microwaves is another think ,is clear radar system with transmiter and receiver together for this it work at UHF.Very interesting this about Dopler system with antenna sat ,i will wait the winter
If you have any news about this system please post it .

Re: Why do Lightning Maps differ so much

thinking more PASSIVE radar - have a read of this :

https://www.ee.washington.edu/techsi...2002-0019.html

which would require some computing power !! - but could be an idea for rainfall detection

the problem with lightning is that there is very little info on what exactly the frequency spectrum is contained with in it ( or its not being made public ) - however if you access to a scanner - then you could try listening to various frequencies on AM during a storm or if there is one near by ( not breaking any of your countries radio laws of course ) better still would be a HF receiver with a down converter from 2 meters ( 144 MHz ) as you would have access to all the modes inc AM and probably filters and attenuators

obviously the higher you go then the less the range will be -

oh for a spectrum analyzer - boy what i could do with one of those - but at 30 grand for a decent one ......

any ways just ideas at the moment - there must BE A BETTER WAY - just got to figure it out - and of course find the relevant kit

ho hum .....

Re: Why do Lightning Maps differ so much

Very interesting concept it i saw, with collaboration satellite doppler radar !!.
I have listen strikes at AM Frequency ,and i have listen local strikes at HF frequency with FM modulation but only very local strikes because FM modulation it have very interferences. For this reason i beleive perhaps at HF or VHF maybe it will be better from local strikes to detected .
