Yellow Warning Re: RFMI Nuneaton Tornado 24 September 2007

Possible image from Nuneaton?

Nuneaton shopkeeper John Maydwell told Sky News: "It sounded like a bomb going off.
"It hit just after 6am. I looked outside and 12 to 15 houses had their roofs and tiles badly damaged."

Re: RFMI Nuneaton Tornado 24 September 2007

Some 50 homes in Nuneaton have been damaged by a tornado, emergency crews have reported.
Warwickshire Fire and Rescue said four crews and a hydraulic platform were in the Mallard Avenue area after roofs were left unsafe by the high winds.

Meanwhile, police said Trafford Drive was closed after 20 homes were damaged and a tree uprooted.

Beryl Warburton, 79, who lives on Trafford Drive, said the storm was "frightening" when it struck about 0615 BST.

"Some of the houses have had their roofs taken off completely, some have lost parts of their roofs," she said.

"One of them has got holes up there and water in their bedroom."

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council said about 35 properties in the Mallard Avenue and Kingfisher Way areas of Nuneaton were damaged by severe weather early on Monday morning.

"The main damage caused has been the loss of roof tiles to properties in the area," the council said in a statement.

"The most severe damage was caused in Kingfisher Way where approximately 10 properties were severely damaged."

A spokeswoman for Warwickshire Fire and Rescue said the crews were involved in the clean-up operation.

"They are getting tiles off roofs and making sure there is nothing that can fall on people," a spokeswoman said.

Council officers said they had found no apparent major structural damage.

Christine Kerr, chief executive of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said: "Our council officers on site have confirmed that there is no apparent major structural damage to the properties which would leave any resident in danger.

"However, we do advise residents not to stand under the eaves of the houses should there be any further roof tiles lost."

Path of destruction as tornadoes hit UK

Tornadoes have caused widespread damage to homes and businesses across the UK as the country experiences a spate of freak weather.
They struck Hampshire, Bedfordshire, East Riding of Yorkshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire.
Around 35 homes were hit in Nuneaton, with Mallard Avenue one of the worst affected streets, with cars damaged as roof tiles were blown off.
Police sealed it off as fire crews attended the scene, working on the roofs of two houses which were among several properties damaged.

Re: RFMI Nuneaton Tornado 24 September 2007

Is it me being a bit paranoid or does that not look a bit light for 6am? I was woken at 5.30 this morning and it was pitch black. I didn't fall off to sleep for at least another hour and it was only just getting light. Or is the light different in Nuneaton than Brum?

Shout me down if I'm wrong or I might have just been too bleary eyed to notice it getting lighter, earlier.
