Snow and ICE Cold Spell 29th December Onwards

Another biting easterly setting up for Wednesday onwards in particularly, but as a weather front grinds the cold air over northern UK on Tuesday, snowfall can be expected across Wales, Midlands and perhaps East Anglia before the proper snow showers arrive widespread on Wednesday.

Perhaps a White New Year for some?

Re: Cold Spell 29th December Onwards

This is the latest update from the UK Met OfficeMet Office: Weather and climate change

Quote:
UK Outlook for Thursday 31 Dec 2009 to Saturday 9 Jan 2010:

On Thursday there is a risk of further sleet and snow in the south and east before it moves away southeastwards. This will allow a cold northeasterly flow to develop across the UK with wintry showers in northern and eastern areas. Some central and western areas enjoying drier, brighter spells. Staying frosty in many areas overnight. Friday and the weekend period look like being in a cold northerly flow with snow showers affecting many areas, especially northern and eastern areas. This will lead to a widespread and sharp frost. The following week looks cold especially in the north with wintry showers here, and possible rain, sleet or snow encroaching from the southwest at times. Overnight frosts are likely to continue.

Re: Cold Spell 29th December Onwards

Im expecting a foot at least. ~ Not particulary here, but metoffice is expecting 30mm rain of SW England, and judging by the freak snow shower band the came from the South Tuesday just gone, which dropped about 1-2Inches in less than hour, it seems likely to happen,

I just dont know where its going to happen, ~ furthermore I see no sign in the next 2 weeks that the cold will let up.
Many days ahead of next weekend may not even see above freezing and -7 sort of temps seem likely widepsread UK.

Global warming has gone on holiday this year and next year? ~ UK and most of Europe and USA all having severe freaky snowy weather for and its early cold season.

I could go on forever... this is the most potential snow event for me in my weather hobby history. Hopefully I can get my camera working get some videos in!! Keep up this topic, my blood is running thick with adrenaline,

This is an overlay of the latest on the snow situation on top of a more detailed map - do you reside in the area that you would like? (biggrin)

Remember these remain low % - just a bit of fun at this stage, but if you're in the zone you stand a good chance (hug)

Steady now troops, your hopes have been dashed in the past and they will be in the future, but the charts do look a bit tasty I'll agree. Just don't get your hopes up too high yet eh.

Re: Cold Spell 29th December Onwards

replace the last word with "neh" ~ I suspect snow and im determined to get it

I know things can change, but at the moment any sign of milder weather isnt till 11th Jan.. but thats all I have, maybe that just means we are going to battle another front of snow from the atlantic.. who knows hey ? ~ Anyway.. not meaning to blab on but I expect this cold air to hit us, other than Snow all the UK can expect is that the cold air will keep the Huge depression over France.

@ T.C ~ thanks for your first post, however I think your warnings should be widespread,

having said that,, its my opinion also . Anyone else want to estimate a forecast?

It's a pleasure to post here.

The Easterly extent of the cold pool specific to snowfall potential is uncertain due to the enhanced WAA. The risk could well extend into many parts to the East of this warning zone - however the most likely zone to support accumulative potential is considered to be parts of the West Midlands, The Peak District, much of Wales and perhaps from the 30th onwards towards parts of the West Country.

The GFS ensembles guidance 12Z simulates strong correlation in the perturbation spread for -4/-5 T850 BL cold pooling to coincide with a moderate intensity PPN phasing. The M4 corridor being a subsidiary marker of the Southerly extent at the initial onset of the PPN from 29th - the Cotswolds the likely Southern extent of any wintriness. This southerly marker does look likely to shift South as we move into the 30th and close to the New Year Eve period with decreasing T850 and 2mT values in the perturbation spread to -3< (+2)

ECM shows good agreement now of the N extent of the encroaching low complex, with only subtle variation in tracking along the cold pool frontal boundary. Naturally this will be a relatively thin line of interest, approximately 100 miles N/S in vertical elongation. So slight undulating in position is anticipated. 40% risk zones seem likely to be upgraded to 60% should ensemble support continue to remain steady or strengthen in bias towards a similar outcome.

The West Country and parts of Devon and Cornwall are very much more uncertain, but in the last 2/3 GFS runs has been showing stronger signals. The risk will include a more transient mobile pattern of PPN with rain phasing to wintriness right now. The isotherm likely to lower in response to the undulating and wavering frontal boundary further N.

I'll keep you posted. Those residing in the Midlands and Birmingham area - it would be advisable to be prepared for a period of snow. The extent and severity of this snow remains slightly uncertain.
