Yes it does appear it could turn back to rain, but the system is in a such a battle we really dont know. I think the low lying land of Bristol may have a lot of snow rain snow.. situation.

Cant help looking at Wales.. (as I live there) .. it may turn to rain on Wednesday, but not definite, thats a lot of snow if it does stick around, 36 hours possibily. Still some patches of Ice that havent thawed here to.

Keep an eye on this like hawks !!

Re: Cold Spell 29th December Onwards

I suspect there may be a brief period when it first arrives that it falls as freezing rain, turning to black ice immediately on contact with untreated cold surfaces. As it turns heavier, it will turn more readily to snow. However during Tuesday daytime the T850's really do increase across southern Britain, so I suspect it will turn increasingly to rain and sleet by evening. Thus I expect it to fall as mainly rain on Wednesday, snow really confined to the highest ground because the upper air is far too mild for snow.
As the system clears southeastwards on Thursday, the cold upper's catch up with the front and so the back edge is likely to contain some snow before it clears away.
Thereafter, and as we go into the New Year, the air will be cold enough almost everywhere for snow should precip fall from the sky.

Re: Cold Spell 29th December Onwards

what a surprise that now the bbc is predicting that it will only be rain for me on the leading edge and i will miss all the snow to my south and west again, nothing new there then after it had been predicting 34 hours of snow it now predicts rain.

Re: Cold Spell 29th December Onwards

I'm not entirely convinced this will happen. My gut feeling is that this is another overhyped event, similar to the 'Winter Storm' event that never was back in February. The upper air rapidly increases during Tuesday so by Tuesday night it will be mainly of rain, not snow. Freezing rain is possible if the air temperature is close to freezing but because the upper air is mild, it will start as rain and freeze on the way down to the ground. All I am saying is don't be surprised if you get rain when you are promised snow by the BBC/MetO. Of course, I'd like to be proven wrong by the MetO

Re: Cold Spell 29th December Onwards

Glad to see you finally post on here Thermo, i occasionally pop in here as well. Really not convinced by tommorow if im honest - things look very marginal and the PPN will most probably be sleet or rain here - thats if it reaches here. Very dissapointing if im honest.

Re: Cold Spell 29th December Onwards

wel i think this settles it, disband the met office start forcasting by standing on 1 leg and having a wild guess, probally more percentage of being right that way. again the forcast changes at the last min which leaves this area with no snow. what a surprise!
