Thunderstorm Discussion 23rd - 29th August 2008

I've craftily had a sneaky peek at the charts for the next 5/6days, here's what they have to offer...

There remains nothing worth looking at storm-wise until at least Saturday morning. By then, the HIGH starts to be 'eaten' by a LOW in the BoB (Bay of Biscay) which should set us up nicely for a Spanish Plume. The highs for Saturday still remain at 26C quite widely inland across England, this is likely to set off afternoon storms across Wales/N England/Midlands. These may push into southern Scotland later in the evening (as the Sun sets much earlier now than it did in July, the storms start losing their energy earlier. However, the seas are much warmer and can sustain the storms as they cross over water.)

My eyes are then drawn to the English Channel and Northern France. As mentioned yesterday it still looks likely that thunderstorms will move up from the south after midnight, at the moment I'm looking at a line from Weymouth-Bristol-Liverpool eastwards by the end of Saturday night (obviously the charts will 'chop-and-change' by Sunday). They then work northeastwards during the day, but are likely to clear by the end of the afternoon as fresher conditions nose into the west courtesey of a cold front.

[My only fear is that the cold front may advance quicker than anticipated, cutting off the Spanish plume too early (as was the case on July 1st) and therefore significantly reducing the thunderstorm chances.]

So a short lived warm and humid spell, albeit slightly cloudy, then perhaps a thundery breakdown by Sunday...

Re: Thunderstorm Discussion 23rd - 29th August 2008

Its really weird, I have always hated lightning and thunder, to the extent I have ran out the house and sat in my car until astorm had passed over!! Now I have discovered IOW/Blitz/strike and this forum, I cannot get a storm for love nor money! 2 years ago we had quite a week of storms in the summer, mainly in the afternoons and evenings and I was observing a storm very close from a factory doorway (I was On My Mobile) and the rain was absolutely torrential and the lightning/thunder was only just over a second apart when a bolt seemed to strike the car park ground about 50-80 yards away!!!! didn't half scare me but also it KNACKERED my mobile phone!!! how could this of happened because it never worked properly again. Does lightning give off some sort of EMP blast????? Regaards; VSC

Re: Thunderstorm Discussion 23rd - 29th August 2008

Just noticed that the Met Office have put thunderstorm symbols over my region for Sunday daytime and night-time and also mentions thundery rain or showers in the text summary for most regions.

All promising signs

(having said that maybe not if they are forecasting it as the 6th August beast was unexpected to them)

storm Thunderstorm Discussion 23rd - 29th August 2008

I know we shouldn't at this early stage, but it's a bit difficult not to get a tad bit excited at this setup.

As mentioned yesterday, we are still on-course for a thundery breakdown for central and eastern UK as we head through Saturday night and Sunday. Before that, a LOW pressure system to the northwest of Scotland will "squash" the HIGH from the west a little, creating a feed of very warm and humid air from the continent and giving perfect conditions for a Spanish plume. This will allow some afternoon storms to develop over Wales/N England and possibly the Midlands too on Saturday.
The unstable air over Spain itself will cause a small LOW pressure system to form over Northern Spain with an associated trough of thunderstorms from midnight on Saturday.

During the course of Saturday itself, the LOW will move NEwards, crossing the BoB, where as seas are very warm at this time of year, it will "suck" a lot of moisture. This will create some pretty big storms as they move over Northern France during Saturday afternoon and, more especially, evening. The most likely scenario is a large MCS to develop, capable of producing large hail, gusty winds and tornadoes.

This hops over the channel overnight, arriving along the south coast after midnight (I'm still going with Weymouth eastwards). It then looks likely to move northeastwards (I think a line from Weymouth-Hull southwards seems most likely) during the day on Sunday. At the same time a cold front will be approaching from the west, which is likely to cause a "lifting effect" ahead of the front, and resulting with some high rainfall amounts in the east from these storms. Unfortunately it all clears eastwards during the evening and by Monday we're back to cooler and showery conditions.

Ah well fingers crossed it pulls off...

Re: Thunderstorm Discussion 23rd - 29th August 2008

I ve been prediciting storms since last Saturady for this saturday and could be intense (forming late in the day) lasting all night due to high moisture humidy coming off the near continent feeding loads of energy in for Sunday when the sun gets to work again. Lets hope the rain coming from Irleand on Saturday will slow down so we all get a better light show !

Re: Thunderstorm Discussion 23rd - 29th August 2008

Susan Powell on BBC1 just described Sunday as "a lot of moisture, the thunder clouds will build up and there will be dramatic thunderstorms in central and eastern areas"
The map showed rainfall from where i am in Gloucestershire eastwards.
Really hope it all comes off. Lets hope the front out west stalls a bit.
