Re: Thunderstorm Discussion 16th - 23rd Aug 2008

A last look at the next few days before I head off tomorrow...

Tonight, despite ESTOFEX, doesn't look favourable for anything stormy. Most of the rain will be light and showery although admittedly there are some really quite heavy downpours over East Anglia at the moment which have sprouted quite quickly in the last hour. The rain pushes north and east tonight, anticlockwise around the LOW over Ireland. There is a low chance it may turn thundery over France and Belgium, but i suspect not much activity, if any.

Another batch of rain moves in tomorrow morning for SW England, Wales and Ireland, and once again moves north and east (anticlockwise), clearing most of the UK except Scotland by midnight. Some quite heavy showers may affect southern Ireland later in the day, and a low risk of thunder. These are likely to hop over to west Wales during the evening, and maybe northwest England later.
Another thing that's caught my eye is the isobars - quite a windy day tomorrow, especially in the west where Gale force gusts are possible in exposed locations.
There is a chance for a funnel/spout tomorrow and perhaps a weak tornado in the southeast during the evening.

Tuesday the focus is for widespread showers, the greatest chance of storms will be in southern Scotland, northern England and the central and east Midlands as a result of daytime heating. Any storm activity, if any, is likely to die out in the evening and it will be a case of "blustery showers with a few rumbles" rather than full blown thunderstorms. These showers may affect East Anglia in the evening.

Wednesday looks mainly eastern, central and northern England and Northern Ireland are best placed but that's likely to change (looks like hilly/mountainous regions). Perhaps western & southern Ireland have a chance on Weds night, very uncertain at this stage.

Re: Thunderstorm Discussion 16th - 23rd Aug 2008

Well i must say that i was expecting today to be pretty much of a washout going by the forecasts.

But wahey! all we have had is one or two light showers (so far) and looking out the window now 17:50 - the sun is shining, it's quite windy so the clouds are moving across quickly, but no sign of any rain soon.
It's all going around me again

Lucky you !
Mind you we were forecast downpours for most of the day. We had a light shower this morning and now we have more persistant rain but between was nice but not necessarily sunny

I'm not going to fall out my back door on the wet deck anymore

Well it stayed dry for me there.

The best chance for thunderstorms tomorrow is from the midlands eastwards, including the north-east, but even showers out west could contain an odd rumble of thunder. The low is moving away slowly allowing a weak ridge to move into the SW so the heaviest showers there will be early on, fizzling out later on.

Re: Thunderstorm Discussion 16th - 23rd Aug 2008

Rain stopped now but there are plenty of black clouds around, and a decent amount of thunder in the distance - at least once every 30 seconds or so! Why isn't stormvue picking up the strikes at all? This has happened before!
