| A Special UK Weather Forecast for the Partial Solar Eclipse Event, Friday 1st August 2008 Duty Forecaster: Dollsworth Forecast #175 in total SOLAR ECLIPSE: 09:23–11:11, greatest eclipse at 10:12-10:18 At the start of the eclipse (time varies depending on your location), there will be a band of heavy, locally torrential rain across central and northern Scotland. It should clear southern Scotland quite quickly at the start of the eclipse, with skies brightening up here. Across Northern Ireland there is likely to be one or two isolated, mainly light, showers, and these most likely in the south. The remainder of the country should be mainly dry and bright, with some sunny spells and variable cloud amounts. Ireland itself will have a few scattered showers in central, northern and eastern districts at the start of the eclipse, and sunny spells elsewhere. Some showers, possibly heavy, are likely across Wales, West Midlands, and one or two in Northwest and Southwest England. Elsewhere across England and Wales it should be mainly dry with some sunny spells and variable cloud amounts, the best of the sunshine always reserved for eastern England. As the eclipse nears its peak, there will still be some locally heavy and possibly thundery rain across central and northern Scotland. A few more showers, some heavy, are likely to develop over Wales, W Midlands, NW & SW England. The showers may merge into a longer spell of rain in southeast N. Ireland and northwest Ireland. The best chances of sunshine will be in southern and eastern England, southern Scotland and western Ireland. For the remainder of the eclipse little changes in the forecast, with showers continuing in areas previously mentioned and sunny spells dominating S & E England, S Scotland and W Ireland. Most places will be breezy throughout, especially along the coasts. To summarise, the best places to view this eclipse will be in southern Scotland, western Ireland and eastern and southern England. You may be lucky enough to dodge the showers elsewhere, perhaps in some sheltered areas. Obviously the best eclipse is likely in Southern Scotland, as there will be sunny spells and more of the Sun covered than other sunnier locations. Worst place to be: Central-Northern Scotland where there is a less than 10% chance of seeing any of the Sun. Generally, the moon will "nibble" the bottom left-hand quadrant of the Sun. Hotspot at the time: London. 20°C (68°F). Coldspot at the time: Aberdeen. 15°C (59°F). The peak in a Nutshell! London: Sunny spells and variable cloud amounts. Very small risk of a shower. 20°C (68°F). Birmingham: Sunny spells and variable cloud amounts. Moderate chance of a light shower. 17°C (63°F). Cardiff: Sunny spells and variable cloud amounts. Moderate chance of a shower. 18°C (64°F). Southampton: Sunny spells and variable cloud amounts. Very small risk of a shower. 18°C (64°F). Norwich: Dry with sunny spells and variable cloud amounts. 19°C (66°F). Manchester: Sunny spells and variable cloud amounts. Moderate chance of a light shower. 18°C (64°F).. Plymouth: Sunny spells and variable cloud amounts. Very small risk of a shower. 18°C (64°F). Newcastle: Dry with sunny spells and variable cloud amounts. 18°C (64°F). Glasgow: Rather cloudy with heavy rain at the start of the event, drying up later. 17°C (63°F). Edinburgh: Rather cloudy with heavy rain possible at the start of the event, drying up later. 18°C (64°F). Inverness: Cloudy with light-to-moderate rain. 17°C (63°F). | Re: **SPECIAL** Partial Solar Eclipse, Fri 1st Aug 2008 Thanks for that Dollsworth- be intersting to see if we can catch it between cloud cover-it may help in an indirect way if it's showery cumulus to dampen the intensity of the sun a little.
