Thanks ... Here is the article Nimbus.
You would have thought the police would know better !

Two police dogs have died in a hot car parked outside a the headquarters of Nottinghamshire Police.
An RSPCA officer was called to the Sherwood Lodge headquarters in Arnold on Tuesday and found two German Shepherd dogs dead in a police vehicle.
An independent vet is carrying out post-mortem tests to establish how the animals died.

Re: 4 Dogs Dead after being left in cars

Absolutely dispicable, whoever is responsible needs to get the sack. Its awful enough when pets are subjected to this type of cruelty but working Police dogs is shameful. Not least to say the waste of tax payers money, coz these are valuable animals !

The Press association has a slightly different report, "The maximum sentence for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal is six months in prison and a £20,000 fine.

Nottinghamshire Police said the handler had not been suspended." Why not .

Re: Police Dogs die in Police Vehicle 2nd July 2009

What seems to be needed is some sort of in-car temperature alarm for those with dogs, possibly connected to the windows/air conditioning system. Anybody know if such things exist? I don't have a dog or a car, so I woudn't know. Could this be a product for Dragons Den methinks!

Good idea! Money maker...
But even without such a device people should know better, and as other people have said the fact that they are police dogs make it seem even worse

Re: Police Dogs die in Police Vehicle 2nd July 2009

It's a good idea but honestly, any responsible pet owners wouldn't leave their dog in the car anyway.

And those who don't care just wouldn't buy it.

But you never know ....

Re: Police Dogs die in Police Vehicle 2nd July 2009

Actually, I have done a quick search on Google and found that someone in the U.S. seems to have already patented a device, to protect children rather than animals in 2004.

Patents; A car temperature alarm is designed to cry out to save the life of a child who cannot. - The New York Times

Apparently a number of children also die every year as a result of this so, if such a device hasn't been adopted to save children, it seems unlikely that it will be installed to save animals.

Rather than wait for the car companies to build this into new cars, maybe what is needed is something you can buy from Halfords and install yourself.

Re: Police Dogs die in Police Vehicle 2nd July 2009

OMG ... people need to be warned about leaving children in cars !!

Well IMHO, it clearly quantifies the average intelligence of the general American public. At least (although in the interests of 'inclusion' I probably shouldn't say this) we (the British) have only contributed to the demise of canines so far (though this in itself is a complete abhorration).

One can only wonder how any human being would be stupid enough to need, let alone buy, one of these devices.

Re: Police Dogs die in Police Vehicle 2nd July 2009

Clearly from the above comments, my fellow forum members are outraged by the tragic deaths of a couple of dogs.... to the point of inventing devices to prevent further deaths. I am sorry for their suffering and think those responsible should be prosecuted for cruelty.

But I wonder if you would feel the same outrage if you read the facts about "preventable" deaths on this page?

The Child Survival Appeal

a reality check for us all methinks?
