Post Plane Crashes at Schiphol 25th February 2009

Nine people died when a plane carrying 135 passengers crashed as it attempted to land at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport this morning.
The Turkish Airlines 737 broke into three pieces as it hit the ground near the runway, narrowly missing a main road and some houses.
Officials from the airline as well as Turkish government ministers had initially claimed that no one had been killed.

But at a press conference this afternoon, it was confirmed that nine were dead while another 80 were injured.

Re: Plane Crashes at Schiphol 25th February 2009

I've never been in a plane in my life, and have no intention of starting now. Seems like a decidely dodgy means of transport to me. Too many things to go wrong; pilot error, air traffic control error, weather, birds, mechanical failure, on board computers, terrorism, etc., etc. Plus all my environmental and ecological objections.

Bring back the trains and boats!

Statistically it may be a safe means of transport. But as the Surgeon said to his patient: "This is an extremely safe operation. There is a 99% success rate. I have done 99 and they have all survived. You will be my 100th." Ummm....

Re: Plane Crashes at Schiphol 25th February 2009

I've flown twice, but I don't really like it. I'm not so bothered about safety, although when I see these stories I wonder, but more the chance of delays! The last time I flew I was told there would be an 18 hour delay, but luckily they got a plane from somewhere else!

Re: Plane Crashes at Schiphol 25th February 2009

Condolonces to those who have relatives who have died in the Crash.

Ive never been a fan of flying though lately i have become more comfortable about flying. I hate the waiting times at Airports though. This is the usual plan at an Airport...

Ages waiting in a queue just to show your passport and put a few bags on.

Days waiting in another queue to see if your going to cause trouble on the plane.

Years waiting in a lounge where you hear all the rubbish about hearing your plane has been delayed for hours.

Decades waiting in the plane for someone to show you where a door is.

Centuries waiting for your plane to have its slot on the runway.

Then when you get there its Milleniums waiting for your bags where they arent.

Then Forever just to then get to your destination!

Like Grey Owl, never flown. We use bus and car regularly, and occasionally the boat to the continent. However, I have been on Concord at Duxford (if that counts)

Re: Plane Crashes at Schiphol 25th February 2009

My first flight was from Manchester to JFK in the USA. Very good flight but a bit fearful of the take offs and landings. Our second flight was a nightmare... delays delays delays then cancellation due to severe storms grrrr
Coming back from Albany we were on a 24 seater twin prop and a bit of a bumpy ride ... on min we were above the clouds and the next min were were below them... not pleasant but thank god we still had our seat belts on otherwise we would have hit the ceiling. Never been on such a small twin prop plane since phew ! Only because we don't need to go to Albany again now.
Flown transatlantic a few times now... far better than the short hop flights.

Re: Plane Crashes at Schiphol 25th February 2009

I haven't flown on a plane since about 2001
Before then i used to fly abroad twice a year and absolutely loved it, the longer the flight the happier i was Not because i was going further afield to hotter climates, but because i absolutely love flying.

It is a safe form of transport.
