Midlands Weather Forum Unreachable?

If you cannot get on to MWF and you get the message "The Page Could Not Be Found" or "The Server is Not Responding" or something similar - the Problem is probably with DNS.

DNS is a technology that means when you type in a website to your browser, the browser goes off to your ISP DNS Servers and asks for the IP address that www.midlandsweather.org.uk points to, the ISP DNS Servers go off to the ROOT DNS Servers and asks them, they then ask the DNS Servers that manage the Zone (ie .org.uk) which then point to the webhost for MWF.

If any of these points fail (as they have today) then the result is no website!

However on Windows:

Click Start and then RUN
in the Run box, type
Code:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
If it asks you, open the file with Notepad.

At the end of your hosts file you want to add an entry for MWF as follows:

Code:
213.175.202.178    www.midlandsweather.org.uk
213.175.202.178    midlandsweather.org.uk
Save the file, and finally

Click on http://www.midlandsweather.org.uk

Hope that helped

Andy

Quite an invaluable piece of information do not want it to become hidden within all
the other posts where it will lay unused for future members of MWF.

Do you think?

The last time the forum had the same problem I did this on my pc and it was the ONLY way I could get on the forum today. Well worth keeping a note of this information !

As the VPS is all sorted again there is no need to do this now but worth keeping for future reference for sure.

Do you by any chance know how to save the file in d*mn Vista?

Cheers,

Re: Midlands Weather Forum Unreachable?

If you are a Linux user you can do the same, or am I the only one

As root go to /etc/hosts

edit the file so it looks something like this

127.0.0.1 localhost
213.175.202.178 www.midlandsweather.org.uk
213.175.202.178 midlandsweather.org.uk
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

Job Done, save and reboot

Steve
