Oregon Scientific WMR200 in Warrington

Hello everyone,

I asked in the Techie World section for advice on a replacement for my dead ELV WS300 and my thanks to Grant for suggesting I look at the OS WMR100. In looking around the web for its specifications (the OS website is abysmal for info) I discovered that weatherstations are about half price if bought in the USA. The WMR200 looked good, but at £400 well out of my price range, unless I went to the USA to buy one.

By good luck my Googling revealed a German EBay seller offering (new) WMR200 for £229 + £18 p&p. It arrived within 4 days and is now fully working - the only downside being the mains adaptor was European 2-pin. Sensor radio reception has been good, even though the sensors are in the back garden and the main unit in a room at the front of the house.

Having just installed it, I'm now waiting for rain and wind, it's flat calm and dry at the moment .

Good, friendly forum this!

Hello Taeppa.

Have you got a UK (3 pin) PSU for console or are you running on battery?

Hi LeeKay,

The manual says the main unit batteries are for back-up only, so I'm temporarily using a multi-voltage mains adaptor, until I can buy a cheapo 6v adaptor in Maplins (about £7).

Re: Oregon Scientific WMR200 in Warrington

That a great saving taeppa. Thanks for the info and keep us informed on how you go on with the WMR200.

Its typical not having any wind or rain but be patient and don't be tempted to tip water in as it usually ends in a error message after overloading the rain gauge !

I'm pleased the deal came off well for you.

You can buy a Euro converter from the likes of Boots. I bought as USA to UK converter for a friend of mine visiting from the USA and it ran an Apple Mac Laptop just fine.

Re: Oregon Scientific WMR200 in Warrington

Maplins ? - I bet you buy stuff from PC World as well.

A plug adaptor you can sometimes get from the likes of Poundworld, and a cheap mains adaptor should be available from somewhere c £3:00.

PS. Grant will be very upset if you used e-bay without going through 'shopping donation' link

I don't think anyone will grumble if your deal involves a saving of around £150. Grant find out that dealers details and get him contracted to the Easy fundraising site

Re: Oregon Scientific WMR200 in Warrington

That same chap (I believe) from Germany has given me an offer for one these.
I wonder if you can just give me an update on how your getting on with it now?
As this does seem a good buy, but I don't really want the hassles of sending it back!
Also did you get stung by any customs charges?
Thanks.

Re: Oregon Scientific WMR200 in Warrington

Hi cub123,

The seller is M Becker who sells under time-shop, appears to mostly sell timepieces. Had no problem at all and goods arrived within 5 days of sale. There were no duties or other charges to pay as this is an internal EU sale (so VAT is already included in the price). I see he has two for sale on E-bay now - he has good feedback and has sold two more WMR200 since I bought mine.

The device works very well, the only problem is that the radio-controlled clock never synchs - even though I have it switched to UK reception; the icon shows weak radio signal. The clock keeps excellent time. Other radio-controlled clocks in the same room work fine - but it's not an important function to me.

Be aware that the OS warranty requires you to return the device to the vendor for warranty repairs. However individually each device is small and light to post. I'd love to know how he can sell them so cheap as it's the European model, not the USA version (receiver selectable to either Frankfurt or UK time signal).

Please ask if there's anything else I can help with. As I don't leave my PC on permanently (wasteful of energy), I've found the data logger very handy and the USB connection just works without drivers - OK with Virtual Weather Station or Weather Display (The latter is included as a cut-down version in the box).

Chop off the 2-pin plug and replace with 3-pin 13amp plug. Make sure the fuse is only 5amps.
