Total Lunar Eclipse 21st Feb 2008

Yep we have another one due next month, although not at the best time of day.

The total lunar eclipse of February 21 2008 will be visible over the Americas, Europe, Africa, and western Asia.

The penumbral eclipse -- the least exciting, and hardest to see part -- will begin at 00:34:59 UT and end at 06:17:16 UT. It will be visible from western Asia, Europe and Africa when it begins around Moonset, the Americas, and the Pacific Ocean it ends at around Moonrise.

The partial eclipse will begin at 01:42:59 UT and end just under 3½ hours later at 05:09:07 UT, and will be visible from a slightly smaller area. The total eclipse lasts for over ½ an hour; it begins at 03:00:34 UT and ends at 03:51:32 UT, with the moment of greatest eclipse at 03:26:05 UT. It is visible over western Asia, most of the Middle East, Europe, Africa, the Americas (barring extreme southwestern Alaska), and the eastern Pacific Ocean. Hawaii just misses out on the total eclipse, and will see the Moon rise about half eclipsed.
The total eclipse should be a spectacular sight, even though quite short-lived; although the Moon will be just within the Earth's umbral shadow (the umbral magnitude is 1.111), it should be visibly coloured by the Earth's atmosphere. Don't miss it!

Re: Total lunar eclipse

Just a reminder that the Lunar Eclipse is due very soon. Lets hope the fair clear weather continues and that fog doesn't spoil our night watcher's view !

A very good explanation of the eclipse to come, courtesy of NASA.

Last chance to see Lunar Eclipse until August 2008

Re: Total Lunar Eclipse 21st Feb 2008

At the moment it looks like it will be largely cloudy on Thursday night, with rain likely in the northwest. The best clearer spells will be further south and east, but these will be limited too (thats how it stands at the moment). Just generally cloudy and mild.

Re: Total Lunar Eclipse 21st Feb 2008

Still not looking good tonight, the best place is still likely to be in the south and east of England. Cloudy elsewhere. Which is typical because we've had two weeks of lovely clear skies by day and night and when we get to the big event it decides to cloud over. And apparently there isn't another total lunar eclipse until 2010!

lol thanks Twister
Unfortunately i can't arrange that - you could always travel down here to Kent, most likely spot to see anything.

I remember watching a lunar eclipse when i was like 8 years old (oh the memories) through a pair of binoculars at 10pm or something. Cant remember the date exactly, but it was interesting to watch.

i presume you want to know what the chances are of seeing the eclipse in the Midlands?
Firstly it depends where you live the best chance wil always be towards the southeast as there will be a lot of cloud around. Even i'm not certain i will see it (if im awake that is lol) as i may have some cloud but in theory i have a better chance here in the southeast. I hope i do see it so i can report back, etc, although i may not be able to take photos as i dont have an expensive camera, only a £60 Olympus Digital camera. Any tips on getting good photos of the moon?

You would need to be able to put the camera on a manual setting and adjust the settings. will your camera do that ?
