Severe Weather Tropical Storm Fay en-route to Florida 18th August 2008

Tropical Storm Fay is expected to reach huricane force by the time it reaches Florida.

A hurricane warning went into effect at 11 a.m. today for the southwest coast of Florida, from Anna Maria Island to Flamingo in the Florida Keys.

A warning means hurricane conditions are expected in the next 24 hours. “Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed into completion,” according to the bulletin from the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Tropical Storm Fay is located about 70 miles south, southeast of Key West. The center of the storm is expected to be near the Keys this afternoon or tonight and near the southwest coast of Florida on Tuesday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 60 mph with higher gusts.
Strengthening is predicted during the next 24 hours and Fay is forecast to become a hurricane as it nears the southwest coast on Tuesday.
The entire area is susceptible to a hit and in the forecast cone.
Forecasters predict a minimal hurricane but that could change when the storm passes over the Keys and travels through the warm Gulf waters. Still, rapid intensification is not forecast.

Re: Tropical Storm Fay en-route to Florida 18th August 2008

Tropical Storm Fay has struck Cuba after causing widespread flooding that left dozens dead in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
The storm appears to have spared Havana and caused minimal damage elsewhere in Cuba, where authorities had evacuated dozens of low-lying areas.
But Fay could reach hurricane strength before it nears the Florida Keys later on Monday, US forecasters say.
Officials there have opened shelters and urged visitors to leave.

Re: Tropical Storm Fay en-route to Florida 18th August 2008

The latest forecast track for Tropical Storm Fay has shifted east, with landfall now possible south of Charlotte County as a tropical storm or minimal hurricane.

The storm is losing speed as it moves closer to land, and is expected to slow down even more overnight.
There is a correlation between the forward speed and the point of landfall, according to Rebecca Waddington, National Hurricane Center meteorologist: The more slowly the storm moves, the further south it will probably land because of how Fay is interacting with steering winds.
Because of the unpredictability of the forecast, the west coast of Florida from Anna Maria Island south to Flamingo is still under a hurricane warning.
If the storm does land further to the south of that zone, it will likely be less powerful than earlier predictions because it will have spent less time over water.
As of 5 p.m., maximum winds at landfall Tuesday are estimated at 69 mph, with gusts up to 86 mph.

Fay makes landfall as a tropical storm

NAPLES. — Tropical Storm Fay made landfall on

Florida’s southwest coast early Tuesday, bringing soaking rains and
gusty winds but nothing like the destruction last seen in the area
during a 2004 killer hurricane.
Streets were largely deserted in the early morning hours in
Naples, where police had a curfew in place. Rain swept across
desolate streets that were littered with palm fronds and other
minor debris, and there was street flooding in spots but no
immediate reports of storm surge damage.
