| We're havin' a heat wave... SLO hit 99 yesterday around noon, breaking the record by one degree. Then the temp dropped a little and the dew point jumped quite a bit. Last night's LOW of 71.5 was about what our normal HIGH for the day is, 72. ![]() ![]() We hit 105 today(!), with RH down to 10% (but it's a DRY heat). This morning the air was fairly clear, but on the way home from work, there was a fairly heavy smoke haze in the air with visibilities down to 10 miles or less. Not sure where the smoke is coming from. Could be the Indians Fire... All in all, one of the few days we could use air conditioning in SLO. Oh, and at 5PM, it's still 98, RH just dropped to 9%, DP of 32 F. Looks like we have 2 more days of this... Gack!

Unfortunately, this is an unusual weather pattern. Before dawn this morning, Friday) it was 82F outside, and the house hasn't cooled down below 80 inside. Temps are forecast to be over 100 again today.

| Re: We're havin' a heat wave... Posting this at 4:40 PM PDT (11:40 GMT) so y'all will see it in the morning. (Well, BJ will probably see it within 5 minutes of posting )Technically, the above statement is correct. The NWS and my Wxsim forecasted 106 F today. SLOweather hit... wait for it... 114 degrees F! Hotter than the San Joaquin Valley, hotter than Las Vegas, hotter than Phoenix, AZ. It's currently still 100 F/92 in the house. Time to go outside and soak myself with the hose again...

| Re: We're havin' a heat wave... Lordy Buck, I hope not! Since I posted that, I've learned that the record high for the date is/was 108 F set in 1929, and the ALL TIME HIGH for San Luis Obispo is/was 112 F set on 14 Sept 1971.

| Re: We're havin' a heat wave... Following up.... I don't know what news from California reaches over there. Saturday the 21st, the last day of the heat wave (high "only" 108F at SLOweather) was a day of lightning north of us. The Indians fire (59,000 acres/71% containment) was already burning. That day saw 5-6,000 lightning strikes to the north and east of us. In the Big Sur area north of us on Highway 1, the Gallery fire started from a lightning strike, closely followed by the Basin Fire. The Basin Fire was so remote that no ground resources could get to it. The 2 fires have since burned together (27,000 acres/3% containment). Highway 1 is closed ~ 100 miles north of us. Our air here, 100 miles or so south of the closest fire has been smoky and hazy all week, so much so that it has dropped our predicted daily high temps by about 10 degrees F. Depending on the wind, we can smell the smoke in the air. Sunlight on the ground has a distinct orange tint, and the sky is generally white. Farther north and to the east, it depends on who you listen to. Total fire count ranges between 800 and 1,000, almost all caused by lightning. Fire fighting resources are stretched so thin that some remote fires are being allowed to burn. Oh yeah. I mentioned that our high on Friday, the first day of summer, was 114F. The heat wave broke Saturday night, and Sunday, 48 hours after the peak, the high was 74F, a full 40 degrees F cooler. What a relief! Here's a link to the CALFIRE (state fire brigade, as it were) map as of 8 AM PDT Friday. Note that upon a cursory glance at the map it looks like there are only ~30 fires, however, those that are called a "Complex" consist of multiple fires. For instance, the "SHU Lightning Complex" is comprised of 158 different fires. http://www.fire.ca.gov/downloads/inc..._062708_AM.pdf And a story from Fox News.
