Prescription charges

I went to the doctors this morning to get the results of some blood tests i had taken two weeks ago.
It turns out that i have got quite a serious problem in my stomach and the doc prescribed 4 different types of pills i need to take.
Well that cost me a whopping £28.40 , surely if you are prescribed more than two types of medicines the payment should be capped to a MAX of £14.20. That's my thoughts anyway!

I have to go back again in two weeks and if no improvement i will have a camera put inside me - not at all looking forward to that

Re: Prescription charges

That definitely sounds expensive however, if we didn't have the NHS you would be paying much, much, much more for your medication and would also have to have health insurance to get treated for all of your family.
In some USA hospitals the first question is about the insurance and not what's wrong. We should be thankful that we have heavily subsidised healthcare.
Some drugs for the likes of cancer etc are extremely expensive (some running into the thousands of pounds) so I would not have a problem paying £28 for medication.
If anyone is going to be on drugs long term there are other options for paying for your prescriptions.
The NHS might not be the best but at least we have it!
Hope everything works out for you.

Re: Prescription charges

If you have to take them regularly you can get a £10 a month prepayment prescription card that covers all your items. You save money if you get more than 3 items in a 3 month period apparently and can pay by direct debit.

PPA - Pre-Payment Certificates

Hope all goes ok, you can get a prepayment certificate for £27.85 (valid for 3 months) this could have saved you a couple of pence already.

Re: Prescription charges

Well i certainly hope these pills do the trick, but to be honest i don't think the doctor exactly knew what to give me.
He got out a book to look at for a few minutes, then left the room for another few minutes, then came back and filled out the prescription form.
I got a horrible feeling i will have the camera chucked down my throat....

Re: Prescription charges

If you have to have the camera down (as opposed to up) they will spray your throat with anaesthetic spray.

Make sure they give it time to take effect cus' they didn't with me and I spent most of the time gagging.

once it's down though they can see everything and it gives you peace of mind.

Re: Prescription charges

I'm not sure how many days your prescriptions are for, so I'll just relay my US experience.

I ran out my annual insurance benefit a couple of months ago. My daily Lipitor costs 4USD per tablet (per day). According to Google, that's £74 per month.

The absurd thing is, my other, generic prescription is LESS at the local big box mart (Costco) pharmacy than our insurance co-pay was at the insurance prescription service.

With little adjustments, we'll be ok. (double dose of Lipitor costs the same, and then split the pills, and continue to get the generic at Costco).

Re: Prescription charges

Or move to Wales. Prescriptions are free here. My wife has MS and believe you me it's like a pharmacy in this house.

The downside is that when we paid we used to get brand name drugs, the real monty. Now we get cheapo ones from all over the world.
