"The Italian government was yesterday urged to call a state of emergency in Sicily after a heatwave resulted in several deaths, forest fires and power cuts.

Temperatures in Sicily and in the south of Italy, have hovered between 104-113F (40-45C) this week. The death toll in Italy reached nine by yesterday evening, while almost 40 people had died elsewhere in central and southern Europe, the majority of them in Romania."

"Temperatures have soared to 115F (44C) in Athens and central Greece, killing five people in the past two days. Air conditioning systems working flat out pushed energy consumption towards an all-time high, and state offices closed early at noon yesterday to conserve power supplies.

The heat wave is expected to continue until tomorrow at least, making it Greece's hottest June ever. Health officials said unnecessary travel should be avoided. "We have 100 ambulances stationed and on full alert in Athens," emergency services chief Nikos Papaefstathiou said."

"A forest fire has killed two people in Greece as the country continues to endure an unrelenting heatwave.

Two men were trapped in their car by the fire near the town of Volos in central Greece. They got out and attempted to run, but in vain.

Dozens of firefighters and planes are battling to contain the fire, one of many blazes that continue to burn across the country, which are being fanned by strong winds."
