Two anti-whaling activists who were seized by a Japanese whaling vessel two days ago have been handed over to Australian government officials on a ship in the Antarctic, Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Thursday.

Two Sea Shepherd activists today illegally boarded the Japanese research vessel Yushin Maru No. 2 in the Antarctic and were immediately taken into custody.
The two men are being held in an office.

Japan ordered one of its whaling ships to free two environmental activists who boarded the vessel in Antarctic waters to demand the hunt be scrapped, Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said.
Australia immediately contacted the government in Tokyo after the protesters from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society were detained yesterday on board the Yushin Maru No. 2, Smith told reporters.
