Unusual October Snow in England - 2008

A series of cold fronts swept southeastwards on Sunday (26th), clearing the southeast by evening. This left a much clearer, but cooler northwesterly airflow, bringing an unstable polar maritime airmass.

Overnight the winds swing round to a northerly, plunging an Arctic airmass further south. Starting temperatures on Monday (27th) were generally around 6-7°C, but...

UKASF Autumn Update

As many of you may know UKASF went offline for over 5 days back in early September. This was due to a massive redesign of the whole site...

At midnight on Sunday 14th September 2008, the new-look website was officially launched at http://www.ukasf.weather2day.com/ with many more features.


Some of the improvements to the site are:
  • Snow Forecasts, issued every evening if snow is expected during the next day
  • White Christmas Forecasts - in partnership with MWF,

Firstly, all of the places i mention in this blog should be (to my knowledge) on the map, all sites where photos have been taken should be indicated with a green star on the map. Also a few of you live in or around the region i visited so i have put your locations on the map also

As I'm sure ScotW will agree, once you start creating maps it gets addictive

I have been dipping into the Met Office Charts and once again spending some time plotting 12 months (x2) of data into one map. Below are the 2 maps for lightning strikes throughout the whole year of 2006 and 2007

Are YOU Storm Starved?

Hmm some may complain about their lack of storms this year I myself have complained a few times, and for a valid reason it seems.
Take a look at the map below, constructed using data supplied by the Met Office, it shows the accumulated lightning strikes from Jan 1st 2008 to June 30th 2008 (July data not yet published). You can clearly see who has and hasn't had many/any lightning strikes this year.
After 20mins of researching, cropping, resizing, recolouring, manipulating, grouping...
