political correctness

Posted 15-May-2008 at 08:06 by brett
oh dear it seems naughty Brett has upset one of the mods by using the "p" word to describe a state of inebriation's in his comments reference drivers - on the basis it "might upset younger readers " - so this common slang word is now considered swearing is it ?? - and i need to have PM's sent to me to tell me so ??

the PC filter edited the word with some asterisks - and in the context of my comment - conveying my disgust at having the contents of someone stomach deposited in my lap and else where when they TOTALY though their own stupidity require me and my colleagues to extract them from a crash - i deem fully acceptable

yes certain words should rightly be censured - but as i don't use THAT type of word in my posts - i think getting a warning for using a common uthanisum for being drunk is hardly the worlds biggest crime

as to "upsetting " the younger readers ?? - der - most of the little darlings know and use more swear words than i probably know

i think this incidence is being overly sensitive - i have no time for political correctness - the real world is a nasty place - with people who do irresponsible things - and cause others to have to clear up the mess !! - it is easy to sit behind a computer and condemn - not so easy when you have had to deal with it all - and trying to protect children by over sensitive moderating is ridiculus - as no doubt they go on other web sites with language a lot stronger ( and worse )

brett - NOT amused ! - if it happens again - then i will just stop posting completely

Blogs, posts etc are publically viewable. To enable the forum to be categorised against such content filters as netnanny and cyberpatrol we have to agree to certain criteria.

Content filtering is serious business in terms of web access. With routers, and other protection software such as norton using these services, its important to get categorised correctly. For instance my teenage daughter cannot get to the boots or avon websites for her makeup. Similarly there is a hair accessory site that is blocked as they have all been classed as carrying content based on "intimate appareil". These filters are active until you set the level from "older teen" to "adult" which then opens up a whole new world of stuff that does carry inapropriate material under the section "intimate appareil".

The forum rules state that swearing is not tolerated so that we meet the criteria of our classification. As a result people started to use *** instead. The problem is that the swear filter also uses *** so we clearly state that *** will be treated in the same way as using an expletive.

People always comment on how friendly the forum is in comparison to other sites. The reason is simple - its because we police our rules. Sometimes, people will get aggreived as they unintentionally fall on the wrong side of these rules, but at the end of the day that is the trade off for creating the friendly environment.

I have put some more information in the MWF blog under the title Infraction Systems

ah don't worry Brett, it's nothing personal I've had a few 'yellow cards' here since i joined, and yes at first i felt a little upset, but it's only a reminder really. I think today is just one of those days to be honest... I feel that way at the moment anyway

Just to let everyone know Brett has not had an infraction warning. He was dropped a polite PM to explain the change made to one of his posts. This in itself is a measure of the respect held for Brett as a valued member of the forum.

Brett has raise this blog to let us know his feelings about the situation which are valid and understandable. However I personally hope this does not deter him from contributing further with his unique blend of popular and diverse posts.

Hi all,

Brett has a very down to earth and straightforward personality, and his views can be contraversial, but i have to say that whatever question you ask him, you will allways get an absolutely truthful answer, he never sidesteps an issue, he and i met on another forum and have often put each other back in our respective baskets, and had a few heated discussions along the way, he is a mine of useful suggestions when it comes to technical problems, and a gentleman to boot, aint you you crotchety old so and so,(he knows hes my mate)

As Captain Pugwash said: " you can tell a lot about a man by the cut of his blog" Brett. As one who has transgressed the modding system on here a few times (some justified warnings, others just certain mods on a power trip) I consider a yellow card issued during debate as a necessary risk to those wishing not to "Bow down" to the political correctness which is used to control the masses. The mods do have a difficult job on here and 90% of the time they are justified in their actions... but sometimes I think they can be a bit "jobsworth" in the prosecution of their duties. I personally like the controversial opinions to debate. One thing I am certain of though, without their efforts the forum would degenerate to an online scrum. Post and be damned I say!
