you know some of the young people today never fail to impress me - like you guys on here that can do all this computery stuff - BJ must be sat there thinking he is dealing with a lost cause with me - after he kindly sent me some links and advice re getting my Watson connected and i replied "can i have that in English please "

now you may find this strange - that we "olds " ( is that the term now ?? ) don't seem to be able to grasp this stuff - but we need to go back to when WE where young

back - way way back ... ( do the shimmery cross fade thingy )

ah here we are 1956 ... having recently kicked Herr Hitlers rear end - Britain was recovering from 5 plus years of war - and rationing had apparently not long ended on some things ( yep 10 years plus ) - petrol was less than 25 p a gallon ( yes you read that right ) and computers where the preserve of a few scientists and also the size of a b&q superstore - owing to the use of valves - transistors had only recently been invented ( valves BTW are like small fires in jam jars )

moving on a few years to when i first attended school - things like laptops where the realms of science fiction - and even when i was at secondary school - the PC had not been invented - well it may have been - but i personally had never even seen one - and as to the Internet ?? .......

tellies where still largely monochrome ( black and white ) - transistor radios where the size of a house brick and digital watches where still a pretty neat idea and some way off - calculators where big things that sat on desks and certainly we where never allowed to use such things in exams ( had they existed as you know them today ) - and the moon landings where achieved with less computing power than you have in one you can buy from w.h.smiths today

so you see my generation was not brought up with computers and that's why we have problems understanding all this stuff - we basically need "plug and pray " solutions to any of the things you guys seem to be able to do in a matter of hours

but then again - i am sure there are many things we could teach you - about "old tech "

so if those of us with advancing years and long memories seem a bit thick when it comes to all this php - squelcy servers and ftp ( what ever that is ?? ) please bear with us -- we no speeky the lingo

at my work experience this week (at an accountants) there is an elderly member of staff, she must be close if not past retirement age but she never fails to impress me - she knows almost everything about spreadsheets and other software used for accounting - but if i were to ask my Nan what a spreadsheet was she wouldn't have a clue!

Well from what my spies tell me, The Beteljuice went to school at Stonehenge, battled the Romans in the Dudley independance wars, and sailed with nelson when he was 50....at just look what a deadly ninja computerist he is!!

However Brett makes a valid point, The "Shardettes" (my daughters) can beat me hands down when it comes to technology and computers. The downside to all of this modern stuff is that the kids of today don't get to experience the "outdoor" stuff we did as kids. I'm getting all nostalgic again ;-)

My Dad is 77 and still plays on his computers.... yes he has a home network of about 4 computers and a number of printers. He used to be a Dataflex Database Programmer in the days before Windows. However, he is TRYING to embrace the internet technology these days with not so much ease so I end up doing the technical stuff while he does the pretty stuff !

I have learnt a new expression today: "silver surfers." That's good. I feel there is something out there for me to look forward to! LOL
Mind you, I find most of my friends in my age group or younger haven't much of a clue about computers so I don't really mention them much unless they have stuffed things up and want me to sort it out for them.
For many of us this technology and its associated add-ons are almost "hard-wired" into our way thinking.
I spent a week on holiday in a place with no internet connection, and no cell phone coverage.
Withdrawal symptoms started within hours!
Pathetic, is it not?
