If we are talking Linux then the .htaccess (hidden) file would be in the www folder of apache. Windoz I dunno never used apache in windoz only iss.! Think Kate is using apache under windoz so things are a bit grey....

The redirect is for punters that use your ip address and not your domain name it just sends them round to use your domain name...and in the fullness of time maybe they will book mark the domain name rather than the ip address.

The bottom line is that 123-reg command window should be able to do this properly , I have no experiance of 123 so I maybe talking out of my backside, if they cant then they are not the company for you.Their tech team must get this all the time maybe they need rounding up a flogged to within an inch or their lives....!!!!!!. You should not need to set up a dns server just so that you can get you domain name working properly.
